Haagen Dazs Mooncake

Ice Cream Mooncake
Crispy Collection

The annual Mid-Autumn Festival is a beautiful tradition in Chinese culture. It is believed the moon is at its fullest on Mid-Autumn day, the 15th day of the eighth month on the Chinese Lunar calendar. In Chinese culture, the shape of a full circle resembles the gathering of family and friends, therefore the Mid-Autumn day (the day when the moon is at its fullest) naturally became the day of family reunion celebrations. Throughout the years, the Chinese invented the desert, moon cake (also in the shape of a full circle), only to be served on Mid-Autumn day.

Also, there is a Chinese fairytale about a goddess who lived on the moon alone by herself. Out of loneliness, she often envied the people on earth who can be together with family and friends. The goddess's only companion was a white rabbit, the moon rabbit. Chinese often associate the moon with the image of the moon rabbit chasing after the goddess. This fairytale often served as a remainder to people of how they should cherish their lives, family and friends on earth.

I think when graphically promoting a product, the most important thing is to make people aware of both tangible and intangible value of the product. Only by doing so, the true purpose of promotion can be achieved.  In my cover design of the ice cream moon cake, the graphic of white rabbits roaming on a full moon behind the clouds simply reminds people of the Chinese culture and traditions related to the moon and Mid-Autumn Festival. Bon appetit!
